A Personal Commemoration of the Battle of Anzio
by Robert Odell
On 22nd January 1944 I was one of 110,000 British and American troops to land on a fifteen mile stretch of Italian beach near the coastal resorts of Anzio and Nettuno. The battle that followed was one of the bloodiest of World War II and culminated in the capture of Rome on June 4th. Sixty years later, in January 2004, I returned to Anzio.
During the war I had served in 248 Field Company, Royal Engineers - a Bedford company - and the anniversary ceremony in 2004 was an opportunity to lay a wreath where many of that company lay.
It was this visit that prompted me to begin this website which, besides being in memory of all who fought at Anzio, is dedicated in particular to the fallen of 248 Field Company.
More has been added to the site since my visit in 2004, and I hope more will be added in the future. On the left is a list of the pages added so far. You can read any by clicking on the links.
